A great port of a masterpiece

Game itself: I had not played a bioshock game until last summer, dismissing them completely. Then I rented Bioshock infinite and was so enthralled by its story and gameplay I decided to check out the original on Ps3. Incredibaly, I was blown away by a game that came out around 6 years before infinite. Story (as good if not better than infinite) and visuals (still really incredible although dated compared to infinite) are some of the greatest. One thing is that, compared to infinite, the gameplay and controls are a bit clunky. However, the combat is so much fun and the story so engaging, that you probably won’t even notice. Bioshock is one of the all time greatest games ever and its sequels are close behind (yes even Bioshock 2). The Port: As this game slowly downloaded on to my macbook pro (late) 2011, I nervously hoped it would run well. The specs were up to the games specifications but I have had many problems in the past with other ports. As I have played the game however, no problems have arisen (albiet I haven’t yet reached the much more fast paced and crazy stages yet). The graphics obviously take a hit due to the capabilities of my computer but as long as it runs with out gamebreaking lag, I’ll be fine. If you have never played Bioshock, get it while its on sale like I did (1 and 2 are a total of 15$). In the end, the port works great and the controller support is just amazing as I am terrible with a mouse and keyboard. Anyway, if your still reading, just get the game already! You won’t regret it!

Awesomeness

I am running it on the 2013 macbook air 13" basic build and it runs great. I cant stop playing, I didnt even go to the restroom while playing this game. I love it. I havent noticed any lag that you cant play it and it runs smooth. I would give it a ten if I could.

A Perfect Port!

I’ve cleared Bioshock about 8 or 9 times on every major system that it is out for (Including OnLive). So you can trust me when I say that this game is not only a perfect port, it utilises Mac hardware perfectly. I’m using an early 2011 Macbook Pro (13 inch) and it ran perfectly. Not once was there ever a hiccup. I really appreciated the Xbox 360 controller support as I don’t particularly like using the keyboard or trackpad (I have a mouse but it’s not the same), and I imagine I’m one of the few PC/Mac players out there that prefers the console feel. The story is top-notch and the acting/voice-talent is simply astounding. You owe it to yourself, if you haven’t delved into the world of Rapture yet, to download this game right now and sit back and be amazed.

Engine.U

Okay I downloaded the game without any error. When I try to open it it say BioShock is unable to open due to Engine.U not downloading. Reinstall the game. Anybody can help me and tell me what is this Engine.U supposed to be????

AWESOME!!!!!

Just finished the game and it runned smoothly. Ive always wanted to play this and it was a good experience. Infinate will bw soon to purchase.

Had me on edge the whole time

Bioshock is an interesting, intense, and downright fantastic experience. I will never forget the first time I set foot in rapture. This dark and complex world is a great setting for a game like this. The gameplay is fantastic and strays away from the average fps by introducing "plasmids". These are essentially cool abilities that you can use on you enemies to give you an advantage. There are a lot of plasmids to find and they all work really well. You will find yourself using nearly every plasmid you have. The weapons in this game are very simple which is a good thing. No two guns are the same. I found myself using all the guns depending on the situation and what splicer I am facing. The splicers are designed really well and there is a lot of variety. Some weapons are more effective on some splicers. You discover which weapons work best either through experience, or through researching using your camera. There are plenty of RPG elements in this game as the game rewards you for exploring every inch of the world. It also punishes you for not exploring. This game requires that you search for ammo because if you dont, you are going to die a lot. The "vita chambers" are areas where you respawn after death. Dying doesnt rewind the game so any damage you did to any enemy will not be erased. This makes some enemies a little easier to beat but sometimes it is annoying because the chambers are pretty far apart requiring you to walk long distances. They also make big daddies less of a challenge. The Big Daddies are the best part of the game. Every battle with one of them is intense and you are rewarded by killing one. If you kill a big daddy you recieve "Adam" which allows you to buy new plasmids and other upgrades. The story is interesting and the game is intense. My only complaint is that at times the game gets very tedious and it feels like they are just unnecesarily stretching the game. Overall it is an awesome experience and worth every penny. 9/10.

I wasn

I had trouble downloading the program, and I even contacted Apple Support. Theyve removed it from my apps, but havent issued me a refund. Apple Store, please either assist me in downloading, or refund my money. Thank you. :/

Just Amazing

I had never played this game before I downloaded it from the App Store and I wasnt expecting it to be super. But after one of the quickest downloads, I started the game and from the second I clicked "New Game" I was hooked. It is by far one of the greatest games of all time. The gameplay is different but superior to other FPS and its plot is just…unfathomable. The second you start Bioshock you will be addicted to it, even after you finish. I played it on my Late 2011 MacBook Pro, 4GB RAM, 500GB Storage and OS X 10.8.5, and it ran so smoothly. There were maybe two or three times where it lagged but that was it. I am recommending this game to everyone, even people who have never played a FPS before. Enjoy!

Overall good

On my desktop (3.0 ghz) it runs very well on the highest settings with only minimal latency at some parts. Game looks good, the story is very immersive and involving, and the combat works well. I havent been able to find anything bad about the game, except that you might need to save frequently, as the auto save happens only when your progress to the next stage. Overall good game, and if you buy it you probably wont regret it.

Good — but grim and gory

Bioshock brings new intelligence, depth, and care to first-person shooters — so much so that the actual shooting quickly gets tedious. Its creators have crafted an astonishingly vivid and detailed world in Rapture, a decaying underwater city whose gloom and despair are balanced by gorgeous art-deco flourishes and colorful neon. The game also has an unusual amount of pathos, and a delightfully savage critique of Ayn Rand’s Objectivist philosophies, both of which are rare in its genre. But beware: When it’s not trying to make you think or elicit dry laughs, it’s straight-up trying to scare the pants off you. This game is mean, and it doesn’t play fair, to the point where some levels can get viscerally unpleasant. (Despite its name, you will not have a fun time in Fort Frolic. Those “statues”… brrrrrrr.) Its spookier sequences are undeniably effective, even beautiful. But playing through them often feels more harrowing than fun. You don’t _want_ to look around that next corner, because something horrible will inevitably spring out at you when you least expect it. And the levels offer little if any break from BioShocks relentless gloom, misery, and decay. (Seriously, there are so many, many corpses in this game. Literally wall-to-wall corpses.) Bioshock is a cut far, far above the average shooter, and definitely earns its plaudits as one of the best games ever. It just isn’t always much fun. Go into it with a strong stomach and steely nerves, or stick with something a bit more lighthearted.

Very Good Game, only problem with subtitles

The game is excelent. It has a great story, an almost perfect gameplay and the game in itself is greatly developed. Only thing that bothers me its the issue with the subtitles dissapearing in mid-dialogue because there are scenes (like Andrew Ryans Scene talking through a screen) that i can’t quite understand what he’s saying. It says that in version 1.1 they fixed this problem but i don’t see it. Anyways great game and worth the money,

Fun but seems short...

Levels could be more complex. It was fun and surprisingly only locked up once. Graphics were great on the retina.

Incredible Art, OK Story/Gameplay

I am currently running this on a baseline 2013 Macbook Air on maximum settings. With the resolution lowered, Bioshock can run at 60 frames per second with no fan kick-ups. Despite the low system requirments, the game looks beautiful. The art deco design of the underwater dystopia Rapture captivates and haunts you. A good pair of headphones is reccomended for full immersion. The interesting dialogue from recordings and secondary characters along with a tremendous soundtrack full of orchestrated music and hits from the 1940’s really set the tone of Rapture. On deeper analysis, Bioshocks Rapture is a biting criticism of Ayn Rand’s philosophy of Objectivism, though it’s also an intriguing look on the human condition and some of the pitfalls of excessive capitalism in general. While the design and lore of Rapture amaze, the main storyline has some issues. The narrative builds up to a memorable plot twist, though the ending feels underwhelming. No meaningful plot points or themes are introduced after the twist, limiting the game to a series of empty shootouts leading to an uninspired final boss fight. The story ends with a cliched double ending that’s determined by the moral decisions you have made in the game, though they are very black and white. Both endings are very expected and feel a bit too resolved. Bioshocks gameplay on the other hand was remarkably fluid for a first person shooter on a laptop. All the weapons and plasmids (unique powers like fire, telekinesis, etc.) have accessible hotkeys. The trackpad worked well and preciesly when aiming. The regular weapons werent genre defining, though the plasmids were a blast! While Bioshock had great controls and fun mechanics, the game was too generous with revivals. You can never die/receive a gameover in this game regardless of the difficulty. Whenever your character loses all of their health, they are revived at a nearby Vita-Chamber a few feet away. No items/currency are lost and enemies retain the same damage inflicted on them. With perseverance, you can kill the most powerful enemies by whacking them with a wrench. With no penalty for death, I lost my initial fears of the ominous environments and never felt pushed to play the game skillfuly. It broke the experience for me.

The Worst Way to Play a Great Game

BioShock is such a great game. It’s critically acclamied as one of the greatest FPS’s ever made, and has an completely captivating story line. BioShock is a great game, but BioShock for OS X is terrible. Trying to use the controls on a trackpad makes this game an incredible frustrating chore. I would imagine the same for a Magic Mouse, as well. The quality of the graphics also suffered in the OSX rendering of the game. I would absolutely recommend this game, but I can’t recomend BioShock on this platform.

10/10

this classic fps will never cease to amaze. to the eerie hallways to the amazing mechanics and plasmids, this game is highly detailed in every splicer to every big daddy. you might have to fight some creepy foes and shoot a few big daddys, but around every corner are mystery, violence, and dredd that will keep you amazed to the very end

Keeps failing to install on 2012 Retina Macbook Pro

I had it successfully installed over two years ago, but now I cannot seem to get the install to complete without failing. The entire installation package will download, but upon completing that portion, it will fail immediately after.

One of the best games ever

This game is so compelling and I enjoy it a lot. It’s absolutely worth the money and I promise everyone that you will have a great time playing Bioshock. The whole atmosphere just blows you away. I love the graphics, the sound effects and the whole story!

Dont Waste Money If You Plan To Use A Xbox 360 Controller

Doesn’t work with a 360 controller wired and have to download 2-3 other applicatons to get it to work. Why say controller support when there isn’t. Took my money...

great game! (if you have a powerful mac

Bioshock is a totally awesome and great game! that is if you can play it :( my mac is too old and will not even try to play it, I have 10.7.5. I know everyone would say "well why dont you update!?!?! well thats good and all, but not everyone has a big wad of cash sitting around :) anyways, great game if you have the specs for it!

Supported controller doesn’t work

I purchased this game after setting up my PS4 controller to work with my Mac and discovering the control scheme provided by the developer. The controller mostly works perfectly, except the trigger buttons are intermittent. This totally ruins the game. I’ve contacted Feral Support, and if they provide a fix I’ll update my review. For now, it’s unplayable.
